Vertigo Brisbane Visual Story
Arrival at Lamington Street
Vertigo Brisbane on Lamington Street is perched 17 metres above ground, attached to the brick wall of the Brisbane Powerhouse. From Lamington Street, there's a paid car park on the right. Follow the road to the right to access six accessible car parking spaces. Ascend the 17-step staircase with handrails located below the Brisbane Powerhouse entrance.
There's a lift on the right that takes visitors one level up to the flat ground surface. Turn left and continue up a slight incline towards the Brisbane Pod. Another option is to exit the carpark and turn right onto a flat walkway for 100 metres, with a covered walkway on the right and a grass area on the left. Continue towards a slight incline to reach the reception pod.
Arrival from Newfarm Park
To access Vertigo Brisbane from the New Farm Park entrance, follow the straight, step-free concrete pathway, passing through the concrete bollards with signage on both sides. The road is bordered by tall trees and trimmed shrubs. Continue for 50 metres towards a slight incline.
On the left is a building housing the lift; next to it are stairs with handrails leading to the car park. Across to the right is the Brisbane Powerhouse building's main entrance. Continue straight for another 10 meters to reach the Vertigo Brisbane Reception Pod.
Reception
The Vertigo Brisbane Reception Pod is situated to the left of the main entrance at Brisbane Powerhouse. The pod features vertical wooden panels, timber walls, blue carpeting, and blue lockers. For added convenience, tables and chairs are arranged on the right. The pod is accessible through step-free entrances at the front and sides.
Inside, staff members are available to assist with securing belongings in a locker and provide lanyards to keep phones secure. They will also help with the safety harness by placing it on the ground. To put it on, step into it one leg at a time, pull it up to the hips while holding the sides, and the staff will secure it by fastening clips at the back of the neck and the front.
Access Wheelchair Lift
Wheelchair users can access Vertigo Brisbane via a specially equipped wheelchair with a harness and cables. A step-free ramp with handrails is located at the rear of the Vertigo Brisbane pod. Staff can assist with transferring to the 66 wheelchairs, which can be done independently, with assistance from a partner, or using a hoist.
The 66 wheelchair features a hip seatbelt, a leg restraint, and a harness over the shoulders. Staff will secure the harness and attach the chair to the pulley system. The wheelchair will then be gradually lifted along the building's side. Upon reaching the top platform, staff will assist guests with moving to a table to enjoy a meal and drink.
Stairwell & Elevator
To access the rooftop, stairwells, and lifts are located to the left of the Vertigo Brisbane Pod. Proceed through the steps with handrails and turn right to an outward-opening glass door.
A concrete ramp on the left of the steps also leads to this entrance. Inside, stairs are on the right, while directly ahead is another outward-opening door leading to the lift, which goes to the 4th floor.
Exiting the lift, turn right to reach another stairwell. At the top of these stairs, an 11-step stairwell is on the right. To access the 6th floor from the ground via the stairwell, there are six 11-step stairwells to the roof. The stairwell is wide and concrete with handrails on both sides.
Rooftop
Upon reaching the rooftop, two more floors of metal steps await. The first metal staircase is steep and narrow, with 9 steps. A flat metal platform follows, then 3 more metal steps to the top. Proceed forward to the restaurant where staff will harness each guest to the railing and guide them straight ahead. Detailed instructions are provided to ensure everyone knows what to expect. The staff are calm and gentle, offering support and assurance if needed.
Sitting down at dining table
Staff will request guests to stand next to their table, where their harnesses will be secured to the anchor points. Subsequently, guests will ascend to the platform and proceed to the elevated wooden chair. At this point, anxiety may intensify.
Guests must sit on the chair, positioning their legs over the edge without a railing or handrail. Secured by two harnesses, the chair will be lowered, allowing guests to turn either left or right based on their seating orientation and rest their feet on the foot rail beneath the table. Anxiety will swiftly subside. Upon arrival, an alcoholic beverage will be served, followed by the meal.
Exiting the dining table
Upon completion of the dining experience, guests will need to face outward again with their legs hanging over the chair as it is mechanically moved upwards. After approximately 10 seconds, guests can rotate their body clockwise and step onto the platform, requiring moderate flexibility and strength.
They will then be harnessed to the safety railing, ready to proceed down the metal steps. Alternatively, abseiling from the top of the building is an option. Guests will be harnessed in and lowered approximately every 11 seconds until reaching the ground.
This exit option is also available for wheelchair users, with the wheelchair securely clipped in and slowly lowered down the side of the Brisbane Powerhouse.
