Who is Cérge and what does Cérge do?
Cérge is a set of companion technologies delivering societal change ensuring we are all more welcoming and inclusive of disability.

A lack of publicly available accessible information and inadvertent discriminatory customer service are the two biggest yet easily solved Social Barriers to community participation, sport & leisure and accessible tourism for up to 1 in 5 people.
Accessible Information...
With increasing impairment comes an increased requirement for publicly available information to make an informed decision about a destination's accessibility and sensory experience.
Fears of "getting it wrong" or "not knowing where to start" hold many business owners from promoting their existing accessible and sensory experiences publicly on their websites.

Customer Service
The greatest source of discrimination for people with disability is from service and hospitality staff. Importantly, this is not deliberate but inadvertent.
With Over 70%
of all disability being invisible and each disability unique to each person, service and hospitality staff are left to guess and lack the confidence to deliver empathetic service to customers with disability.
The Cérge Companion App provides service staff the confidence to ensure empathetic customer service and deliver meaningful social impact.

Cérge Companion Websites
The Cérge Companion Websites are a plug and play solution for a venue or destination to make a stepped change in the publicly available information detailing accessible and sensory experience imagery and descriptions.
An immediate and significant uplift in publicly available information empowers customers with disability, parents, carers and support workers to make an informed decision before arrival.
Designed to link directly from a company’s website, the Cérge Companion Website contains:
Visual Story & Sensory Guide
Access Guide
Virtual Tour
Audio Guide powered by A.I.
Keyword Sign Board
Communication Board
Cérge Companion App
Imagine having your own personal disability and mental health advocate in your pocket to ensure you receive warm and empathetic customer service whilst participating in local community, sport, and whilst traveling.
The Cérge Companion App is a free assistive technology for individuals with disability, support worker, carers, and parents to notify a participating destination/venue of specific service preferences ahead of time and remove the fears and anxiety of how you or your loved ones will be treated.
Discreet messaging from app direct to the venue empowers customer service staff with complete confidence and knowledge to ensure an inclusive experience.

Being mobility challenged, travelling can be daunting. As I am on bilateral crutches, I was also concerned about needing to wait for extended periods lining up, as this is difficult for me.
Travelling with children adds an extra layer of challenge to the mix. While many people can just arrive at the airport & ‘go with the flow’, it takes planning & organisation when I travel, which can be stressful.
Recently I had arranged to fly to Sydney for a holiday with my three children. I was somewhat apprehensive due to needing to navigate through the airport with the children & manage all our luggage.
However, prior to travelling I had visited the Cérge website wherein I found a huge amount of information about the Sunshine Coast Airport. I was able to view a floor plan of the airport, & even do a virtual walk through with a 360 degree virtual tour.
On the day of travel, I used the Cérge app to notify Sunshine Coast Airport of the time that I would be arriving & check in on arrival. The app itself also had extensive information about the airport & what to expect, including a comprehensive sensory guide.
Once the children & I arrived at the entrance to the baggage check-in, Jordan was waiting to greet us & guide us through to the Qantas check-in area. We were guided through a priority lane, which meant we didn’t have to line up. This in itself was a huge relief for me as prolonged standing is difficult.
At check-in, Jordan remained with us until all bags were tagged & checked through & we had received our boarding passes. We also discussed the possibility of assistance for boarding the flight & a lift was arranged for the time of boarding.
Jordan then walked us through to the security check. He assisted us to run all items through the security screen, & there was a chair for me to sit on for the purposes of screening.
After we had gone through security, Jordan showed us to our gate, provided me with a telephone number in case I needed anything prior to boarding, & was helpful, friendly & knowledgeable. We were then collected by Qantas staff & assisted to board the plane using the lift.
At no time throughout our whole time at the airport did I feel a burden to anyone, & I didn’t have to spend time trying to organise assistance or work out a way to navigate difficult areas. The stress was removed, such that by the time I sat in my seat on the plane I was relaxed & ready for our holiday, not stressed & exhausted from navigating our way through check-in, security & boarding.
What a wonderful service Cérge & the Sunshine Coast Airport offer. I have no doubt that Sunshine Coast Airport’s initiative to embrace inclusion & accessibility will make a huge difference to many.

When people don’t try and communicate and can’t be bothered it makes me feel uncomfortable, unimportant and small. Just because I can’t hear doesn’t mean I should be treated differently. Today I arrived at Huntly Aquatic using the Cérge App. I am a Deaf woman and communicate via sign and lip reading mostly. I often have communication struggles and a lot of people do not use sign language or it takes them a while to realise I am Deaf and that I need to communicate differently than what they may have assumed. However today, at Huntly Aquatic I was greeted by two staff members who were very pleasant and kind. I will be honest I was nervous because I wasn’t sure what it would be like or if there would be a communication breakdown. I had put my information into the app so I knew they were aware which I think helped both sides prepare. When I arrived we spoke together for about 5 mins, we used a range of gestures, writing and typing on the phone which is fine. I liked that they were enthusiastic to do their best to communicate with me and it didn’t feel like a bother. We enjoyed having a chat :) I was able to find out everything I needed to know about the venue and the locations of all 3 pools. They have a kids areas too which was great because now I shall return with my kids and have a great family inclusive day out. Being a Deaf person sometimes I experience people thinking I have a low intelligence or that I won’t understand them. This is a really damaging assumption as I am a smart woman and live a great life, I just can’t hear. I am really mindful of not wanting my kids to experience or witness discrimination as I went them to have a great experience in the world and see all people as equals. I really enjoyed using the Cérge app, I had heard good things about it from a friend who used it in Auckland and so I was happy to give it a go!

On Saturday, my partner and I had a delightful date playing mini-golf at Point Walter Golf Course! For me, managing social situations can be tricky fas I experience additional barriers to communication, social anxiety and agoraphobia. When I am faced with unfamiliar faces or new settings, my comfort zone shrinks and being able to vocally communicate becomes impossible. That's where my AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) device steps in, helping me connect with others when I cannot rely on my vocal speech. The biggest hurdle for me in accessing the community often lies in people's perceptions. Using an AAC device sometimes leads to misconceptions, such as the assumption that I can't hear when other’s talk or that I don’t have the capacity to understand what they’re saying. It can sometimes be amusing to witness the charades people do trying to act out what they want to communicate before I type the familiar phrase, “Please speak as you usually would—I can hear and understand you”. Sometimes amusing, often frustrating.So….. here's where the magic happened! The Cérge app put me in the driver's seat, allowing me to decide which of my access needs I shared and the level of detail I felt comfortable sharing. See ya later assumptions! Instead of explaining the intricacies behind the way my Autism presents, I could focus on what I needed on that particular day at that particular venue to enjoy it stress-free.Checking the Sensory Guide before leaving the house was a game-changer. It reminded me to grab my noise-cancelling headphones, hat, sunscreen and therefore preparing me for both the environment at the golf course and the noise levels I might experience at the cafe.Richard in reception was open and receptive to communicating with me and made me feel seen and welcome. He took the time to explain the details of the course in a way that gave me all the information I needed without any uncertainty. The result? An absolutely fantastic time at Point Walter Golf Course!Even though my partner beat my score by 10 (lucky them!), I had a wonderful time! Thanks to the Cérge app, putting me in control and making the outing stress-free and enjoyable!

We are teaming up with a new initiative, Cèrge. Cèrge is a communication platform created to help people with disability connect with local businesses in their community. It allows organisations to provide personalised services to customers with disability with the aim of reducing the fear, anxiety and discrimination individuals with disability go through as customers. Through the Cèrge app, the customer can notify participating businesses that they will be arriving, giving staff awareness of what the customer may need while in the store.Today our customer visited the Swan Hill Leisure Centre to have a shot of basketball with his support worker. He was able to communicate through the app notifying the leisure centre of when he would be arriving and what he was planning on doing while there. Upon arrival he was met by staff who greeted him by name creating a welcoming experience for our customer. This helped our customer feel very comfortable and he went on to enjoy a shot of basketball while there!

I use a mobility scooter for all of my outings so it is vitally important that I have access to information about different places. I can’t tell you the amount of times I get caught where I can’t access a grocery aisle, a corner store, a clothing store or a chemist. Things like the size of the aisles, the doorways can all mean I can’t access them. Not to mention not being able to reach things on shelves. My partner is also my carer and so when I heard about Cérge we had a chat and decided to see what all the fuss was about. I don’t like to make a bother for people, I just want to be able to access the places I need and want to enjoy my life. Seeing Mudgereeba Aquatic Centre on the Cérge website was great, so close to me and a place I wanted to visit for hydrotherapy. My partner and I sat and looked through the Visual Story and Access Guide to make sure I was, 1. Find suitable parking 2. Able to get inside from the carpark 3. Get in the doorway 4. Have somewhere I can get changed 5. Get into the pool 6. Water at a temp that is ok for my hydrotherapy 7. Enjoy myself with minimal anxiety After looking through the tools I felt happy and equipped with the information to be able to attend. Abby was the staff member who greeted me when I arrived and she was so welcoming and helpful. She was a breath of fresh air and had the whole situation under control and we felt very at ease. I use pool noodles and enjoyed such a great swim. You need to take your own equipment to the pool which is pretty standard. We felt very accomplished and I would love to return to this pool! It’s so good for my body to move but it’s even better for the mindset! I really enjoyed myself, thank you everyone :)
I have anxiety, fibromyalgia, issues with sensory overload ADHD
and rheumatoid arthritis. So I have quite a few barriers to
accessing an aquatic centre and feeling comfortable.
In my daily life for work, I support clients include mature-aged
women with chronic pain and health conditions; and stroke
survivors requiring minimal support.
So using Cérge to visit Watermarc Banyule yesterday was a
tremendous experience as a user but also seeing the benefits for
the people I work with. My own intrinsic experience in two
varying ways yet both amazingly complimented each other and
how this can change so many lives and enable me to support my
people SO much more.
As I drove towards the venue there was some construction near
the venue with some of the area out of street view. I was a bit
anxious but having read up in the app I remembered that it was
said the venue is on a hill and there is underground parking; with
direct access to the venue with a lift!!
Yay no stairs!
It helped to know it would be a big building so you knew what to expect. Not
all people with disability need lifts, or ramps. But today, for me. I did.
I did not get lost and nervous as I usually do when going to a new
place, so it was a nice experience. It’s actually incredible how just
being able to mind map a venue from looking at all the
information beforehand seriously relieved so much for me. The problem- you have to literally scour multiple websites to try
and get the information you need.
I need more than a car park, opening times and a pretty webpage.
I need to see the toilet.
The change room
I need to know the smells and noises.
The stuff that isn’t pretty on a website is usually what most people
need but can’t find, so they stay home. Trust me.Noah told me where the change rooms were and they were clean
and not crowded. I had seen them in the Visual Story and they
looked the same which is always comforting.
I used the exercise equipment as stated in the app to use in the
pool; I always thought people had brought their own! When I
asked when are the usual quieter times, Noah understood that I
would enjoy a time when the water slide closes in the late
afternoon and then the rest of the facilities are still open to be
used. Noah felt like a friend. I think me using Cérge kinda made it
feel like we had a mate in common so we had rapport quickly.
Overall a very pleasant experience that I would do again and
recommend using the app to clients, friends and family. I would
actually go to places mostly that are on the app as I will feel less
anxious and I will know before I arrive if physically I can use the
facility or not.
