Nambour Special School Visual Story
Arrival & Reception
Nambour Special School is a series of low set buildings on Windsor Road. Other junior and senior schools are nearby. Well established trees provide ample shade on the flat school grounds. There is an undercover drop-off and pick-up zone in front of administration office.
Parking is available outside the school grounds. From the parking area, a concrete, step-free path leads to reception. A low-set reception desk allows wheelchair access to the reception desk. Students attending junior school meet teachers to the right of reception. Senior school students meet teachers on the left of reception. Safety fencing provides a barrier into the school grounds.
Primary Classrooms (B, C, D, E, F, J, K Blocks)
Primary room classrooms are accessible by covered walkways. Each class room is named by a letter of the alphabet. Classroom B is to the right of the main Administration building. Classrooms B, C, D, E, F, J, K all have a similar design. Each classroom has step free door ways with sliding glass doors.
Rectangular in shape, each classroom has two main teaching areas. Each teaching zone has a smaller quiet room or activity room for quiet time. Separating the two main teaching zones are a kitchenette area and an amenities area. A small outdoor play area is found at each classroom. The outdoor play area may be shared with another classroom.
Primary Classrooms (G Block)
G Block is a multi purpose block and located behind the administration building. A full size kitchen and dining area is the central feature to G Block. Students are not permitted within the kitchen. On each side of the kitchen and dining area is a small classroom and a board room style room.
Access to the board room is through an orange outward opening door. G block is an open space with high ceilings and wooden beams. Many seating options are available with high backs and arm rests.
Primary Classrooms (H Block)
H Block is the largest of all the junior school buildings and is located beyond G Block, The SHED & the Library. Four separate classrooms are found within H Block, named H1, H2, H3 & H4 along with a classroom dedicated for Life Skills.
A long wide corridor extends the length of H Block with teaching classrooms on the left. Handrails extend the entire corridor and on both sides of the wall.
Accessible amenities are found on the right of the corridor between H3 & H4. All classrooms follow a similar layout of a bright and open space surrounded by children's artwork and decorations as well as tables, chairs, and a kitchenette.
Primary Bathrooms
Each Classroom has accessible bathrooms. There are many accessible amenities at Nambour Special School. Bathrooms include left hand and right hand toilets, hoists and adult change tables. Each bathroom contains cleaning and personal hygiene products.
Library
The library is between E & H Blocks. A small ramp allows step free entry into the library. Two separate doorway entrances have outward opening wooden doors. Bright colours, book shelves and grey carpet tiles are features within the library.
Two areas of the library are separated by a small corridor. Students may select and borrow books from the librarian or sit and read books in a small reading room. Teachers may also read stories to students.
The SHED
The SHED is a central feature within the Junior School campus. Located behind the administration building The SHED has six large roller doors. Made from light green corrugated iron the building resembles a large shed.
The floor is made from polished timber floorboards and has high ceilings. With a lined roof and fluorescent lighting, the SHED is a multipurpose event space.
The SHED is used for school assemblies, school performances, sport and recreation activities. Activities include Christmas and ANZAC day events. Furniture and sporting equipment changes to support different activities within the SHED. A large mural and audio visual screen are visible on the distant wall.
Travelling to the Secondary School
Follow the covered pathways left from the administration building to the Secondary School. Move passed F Block on the right and N Block on the left and continue to the playground. A long covered walkway extends down a slight slope across the entire length of a sporting field.
A black gate separates the junior school from the senior school. At the gate is a seating area with colourful timber slats. Continue along the covered pathway with garden beds on the right. Ahead to the right is the large, low-set Q Senior GLA Block, with the sports oval on the left.
Secondary Classrooms
The senior school is a single building named Senior QLA Block. The building is a long rectangular shape with six step free entrances. Each entrance has an outward opening manual glass door. An internal corridor and external walkway extend the entire length of the building.
The internal corridor has timber floors, white walls and high ceilings. Twelve classrooms make up the Senior School located on either side of the corridor. Senior school has two separate kitchen teaching spaces and a central bathroom area. Each classroom has a unique letter and number and door colour.
Secondary School Kitchen
Two kitchen training rooms are located within the senior school, rooms Q1.05 and Q1.17. Both kitchens are the same design. The kitchen is an open space with a stove, sink, fridge, microwave, and white storage cupboards. The sink and stoves are adjustable in height.
Two moveable tables in the middle of the room create a large work space. Bright coloured chairs may be stacked along the walls or positioned around the central table.
Secondary Bathrooms
Shared bathrooms are located in the middle of GLA block for all senior school students. The first aid room separates the male and female bathrooms. Both bathrooms include an accessible toilet with left hand and right hand railings.
An adult change table, hoist and shower are available in each accessible bathroom. Access from the external walkway is available through an outward opening wooden door.
Swimming Pool
The swimming pool may be identified by the large blue sign that reads Nambour Special School. Move left from the administration building past the SHED to the small playground. The pool is on the left through a black metal gate and outward opening glass door. The internal pool is 16 meters long and 8 meters wide.
A ceiling hoist, ramp and steps supports full access for all students. Bright coloured floating toys and supports hang from the roof and found along the walls. Dedicated accessible amenities including an adult change table, hoist and accessible toilet.
Playgrounds
There are a range of playgrounds throughout the Nambour Special School. All playgrounds have different play equipment. There is a playground between C Block and B Block, which has a slide, swing, and water play area. The playground at D and E Block includes a swing and climbing nets.
All playgrounds have a rubber mat and shade canopy for safety and comfort. Accessible playground equipment also includes accessible swings for students in a wheelchair. The Secondary School features a small playground inclusive of a rock climbing wall.
Oval & Grounds
The junior and senior school both have dedicated sports ground areas. The junior school sports area is beside the pool and N block. The large open area includes soccer nets and surrounded by buildings and walkways. The senior school sports ground is next to the GLA block.
The senior school sports grounds often has painted running tracks and soccer nets. Both sports areas have thick and soft green grass.
School Arrival & Departure
Arriving students meet teachers at dedicated meeting points for support moving to classrooms. Teachers may wear high visibility vests and carry clipboards at the meeting points. The junior school meeting point is on the right of the administration office. The senior school meeting point is to the left of the administration office.
The arrival and meeting areas may become very busy as students and buses arrive to school at the same time. At the end of the school day students are supported from classrooms back to the meeting points. Students wait for parents, guardians or the bus on the chairs provided.
