Withers Community Library Visual Story
1. Arrival and Parking
The Withers Community Library is located on a sloping site with red brick pavement that is uneven in places due to tree roots. The building is a small, white-painted brick structure with lime green signage. There are two accessible car parking spaces directly in front of the library, connected by a ramp with metal handrails. This ramp leads to the entrance which has an automatic glass sliding door. A five-step entry with handrails and tactile tiles is also present. Surrounding the area are established trees and shrubs, with a metal fence and gate on one side. A concrete footpath runs alongside the parking area, connecting to the street.
This space is used for library access and parking. Activity levels may increase during library opening hours. Sensory elements include the scent of nearby trees, coastal air, and sounds of birds and passing cars. Walking on the red brick pavement produces the crunching sound of dried leaves. The area is exposed to natural light with some shaded spots under trees.
2. Main Library
This library area features light brown brick walls with large timber posts supporting an elevated arched ceiling. The ceiling includes exposed ducting, hanging linear lights, and ceiling fans. Windows positioned high on the walls and floor-to-ceiling windows along one side provide natural light. The floor is carpeted with a dark blue base and colourful square patterns. Mobile white bookshelves are spaced widely to support ease of movement.
To the right of the entrance against the far wall is a central reception desk with a low counter, set against a lime green wall displaying community-themed words. Computer stations are positioned along this wall. An accessible bathroom with grab rails and a baby change table is located nearby. Seating includes couches and armchairs near the windows. The space is divided into sections for different book types and includes a children’s area with tables and chairs.
3. Kids Corner
This children's library area is located directly ahead from the entrance and to the left of the reception desk. The space features a sloped roof with a low ceiling, contrasting with the main library's higher ceiling. Walls include a bright orange mural with a tree and leaves, and silhouettes of aeroplanes. The floor is carpeted with colourful square mats near the children's seating and play areas.
Furniture includes small bright plastic chairs, carpet mats, beanbags, couches, and low wooden bookshelves displaying children's books. The area is enclosed by walls with no visible gates or fencing, and is connected to the main library through a wide, step-free opening.
4. Community Room
The Community Room is accessed via the Kids Corner through a step-free doorway. The room features white walls and a white ceiling with fluorescent lighting. The floor includes a vinyl surface with colourful carpet rugs placed throughout.
The space contains collapsible white tables arranged in a square and black café-style chairs. Cabinets line one wall, and a kitchenette with a microwave, kettle, and sink is available. One wall displays a range of promotional materials, colourful posters, drawings, and flags.
