The Hills District All Abilities Playground Visual Story
Arrival
The arrival area at The Hills District All Abilities Playground is located in an urban setting next to a sports field. Established gum, fig and paperbark trees surround the playground and provide natural shade. The nearby car park includes three accessible car parking spaces positioned close to the entrance. Step-free concrete pathways connect the parking area to the playground entry.
The playground is fully enclosed by a boundary fence. Entry is through a gate fitted with a pool-style latch that may require adult assistance to operate. After passing through the gate, the playground area is located to the left. Moving further along past the rubbish bins and to the right leads to the toilet block. Visitors may hear passing vehicles and activity from the nearby sports oval. This area is used for playground access and supervised recreation.
Picnic and BBQ Area
The picnic and barbecue area is located directly inside the playground entrance. The space includes shaded seating areas with picnic tables and electric barbecues. Yellow and red panels form part of the surrounding structures, and the ground surface is paved to support step-free movement throughout the area. Small garden beds surround the space.
The nearby toilet block is open from 5am to 8pm and includes one ambulant toilet and one accessible toilet with handrails and a baby change table. The picnic area is positioned close to the playground, allowing supervision of the play equipment. This space is commonly used for shared meals, rest breaks and informal gatherings.
Playground Areas
The playground includes three distinct play areas connected by step-free concrete pathways. The main play zones have a soft rubber surface, supporting movement throughout the space. Large orange poles support black shade sails that provide overhead cover. Landscape features include garden beds and a sandpit with two diggers.
The playground includes wheelchair-friendly play equipment, adaptive disability swings and a sensory sand play area. A musical play zone allows children to interact with instruments such as a glockenspiel, drums and a xylophone. There is also a “Learning Braille” clock. The toddler area includes smaller-scale play equipment, while a larger climbing structure is located in a separate zone for older children. The area is used for supervised play and active recreation.
Herb Garden and Sensory Zone
The Herb Garden and Sensory Zone has a bee and flower theme and includes elevated herb and plant beds positioned at accessible heights to support touch and close interaction. Decorative yellow structures shaped like citrus halves are positioned among the garden beds and established greenery. Wide, smooth concrete pathways connect this space to the surrounding playground areas.
This zone is designed for sensory exploration and supervised outdoor activities. Visitors may touch or smell herbs and plants within the garden beds. The open layout supports movement for people using mobility aids or strollers.
