Boccia
Boccia is a bowling game that requires concentration, strategy and accuracy rather than strength and can be played socially and competitively up to Paralympic level.
Boccia is similar to the Italian game of ‘bocce’ for players of all abilities, including those with a physical disability. The objective is to throw, kick or use a ramp device to propel leather balls as close as possible to a white ball which serves as the jack (target). Athletes compete in team and individual events on an equal level.
Players can also classify and have the opportunity to compete in representative Boccia at regional, state, national and international levels.

Two teams of three blindfolded players throw a bell-ball towards their opponent’s goal, using their body to protect their own goal. The game requires team communication, coordination and strategic skills and offers many social and physical benefits as well.
Sporting Wheelies provides development opportunities for new players to improve their skill level and fitness at training sessions and competitions. Players can also compete in representative Goalball at state, national and international level, including the Paralympics.
Whilst sighted players can compete up to National level, a vision impairment classification is required to compete internationally.

Para Powerlifting was one of the first sports contested by people with a disability and requires strength, power, coordination and dedication to training. For athletes with vision impairment, competition consists of the bench press, squat and dead lift, whilst athletes with an amputation, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury or other physical disability compete in the bench press only.
Para Powerlifters can compete in state, national and international events including Sporting Wheelies Para Powerlifting State Championships, Powerlifting Australia National Championships, Commonwealth Games and the Paralympics. Athletes, however, need to be classified to compete at state, national and international level. Para Powerlifting is only available for lifters with a physical impairment.

Exercise Physiology
Sporting Wheelies offers a range of therapies designed to improve functional capabilities. Our Accredited Exercise Therapists will work with you to utilise the most appropriate treatments to work towards achieving your goals.
FES Cycle
FES is a validated rehabilitation technique that administers pulses of electrical current to stimulate peripheral nerves (the neurons that connect the spinal cord to the muscles), generating involuntary muscle contractions and patterned muscle activity. FES is non-invasive and applied using adhesive neuro-electrostimulation pads placed over prime mover muscles. When activated, FES achieves patterned movements in the arms/legs and trunk during cycling on the RT-300 bike. Dependent on the individual, benefits can vary, but commonly demonstrate increased blood circulation and prevention of muscle-wasting.
Strength and Fitness Builder
This session is ideal for people who want to improve cardio-respiratory and musculoskeletal fitness, promoting a more active and healthier lifestyle. Fitness Builder can help you meet personal goals involving increased strength, capacity and endurance. This specialised service is delivered by an Accredited Exercise Physiologist and is ideal for participants requiring minimal manual assistance. *Available via Telehealth and Home visits (travel costs apply).
Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy is used to assist with the rehabilitation of neurological, musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary and psychological function of the individual. In some cases it will also assist in maintaining the client’s level of function or prevent deterioration (eg balance and falls prevention) or prevent injury (eg aid in recovery in a preventative sports medicine program).
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy provides a holistic, hands-on approach that addresses a person’s individual needs across a broad spectrum of neurological, musculoskeletal conditions, rehabilitation and chronic health conditions.
Physiotherapists will help you recover from injury, reduce pain and stiffness, increase mobility and prevent further injury and can tailor a treatment specific to your condition.
You don’t need a doctor’s referral to see a Physiotherapist, however we will often work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to plan and manage treatment for a specific condition.
Physiotherapy treatment methods include:
- exercise programs to improve mobility and strengthen muscles
- joint manipulation and mobilisation to reduce pain and stiffness
- muscle re-education to improve control
- airway clearance techniques and breathing exercises
- soft tissue mobilisation (massage)
- acupuncture and dry needling
- hydrotherapy
- assistance with use of aids, splints, crutches, walking sticks and wheelchairs to help you move around.
