Southport Community Centre Visual Story
Arrival
Southport Community Centre on Lawson Street is a two-storey modern concrete, steel, and glass building with green design features. It is in a busy business district, with a parking area that includes two accessible car parking spaces next to Woodroffe Park.
Large gum trees provide shade over the step-free concrete pathway from the car park to the facility. A children’s playground is nearby, set against the backdrop of tall skyscrapers. The location supports community activities, park visits, and events, offering both activity and calm in the same space.
Entrance and Foyer
The entrance and foyer provide step-free access through a manually outward-opening glass door. Inside, the space has grey tiled flooring and a low white ceiling, creating a functional environment. To one side, a vending machine offers snacks and drinks, while a stairwell and elevator provide access to Level 1. Directly ahead is the reception counter, fitted with a glass sliding partition where visitors can speak with staff.
From the central foyer, a corridor leads to a small kitchen, accessed through an inward-opening door. The kitchen has stainless steel counters and a microwave oven for meal preparation. The same corridor connects to two performing arts rooms, accessed via a manual glass sliding door, and to an accessible toilet fitted with grab bars. People may be seen moving between rooms, preparing refreshments, seeking assistance, or waiting for activities to begin.
Ground Floor Meeting Rooms
A series of meeting and performing arts rooms connect from the entrance and foyer, available for community hire. Meeting rooms have grey carpet tiles, while performing arts rooms feature wooden floorboards. Room layouts vary depending on the event, with furniture and equipment arranged to suit activities.
Some meeting rooms can be accessed directly from outside the facility, with entry managed through specific instructions and a swipe pass provided by reception staff. These spaces are used for meetings, workshops, and performances, fostering a calm and professional environment that prioritises collaboration and creative work.
Conference and Events Hall
The Conference and Events Hall is a large space with high ceilings and wooden floorboards, entered through an outward-opening door from outside the building. Bright fluorescent lights illuminate the interior, and blue stage curtains provide contrast to the wood. The hall can be arranged in multiple layouts, including classroom seating or open spaces, with retractable walls allowing flexible room sizes. An accessible lift provides stage access.
The hall connects directly to ground-floor meeting rooms and to a corridor leading to accessible bathrooms with grab bars. It accommodates a wide range of activities, from corporate meetings to performances, with sound carried across the space during busy events.

Level 1 Meeting Rooms
Level 1 contains six meeting rooms and a large conference room, reached by an elevator or the stairwell from the main entrance. Entry is through an inward-opening door into a carpeted waiting area with couches for seating. To the right are meeting rooms F1, F2, and F6, each with grey tiled floors, fluorescent lighting, and layouts that can be adapted for presentations, group discussions, or training sessions.
Further down the corridor, additional meeting rooms and a spacious conference room offer similar flexible setups with tables and chairs arranged to suit event needs. A dedicated kitchen is available for food and beverage preparation, and accessible bathrooms with grab bars are located nearby.
Large windows provide natural light and views of greenery, contributing to a calm work setting. The floor supports a steady flow of meetings, workshops, and seminars, with people moving between rooms in an organised, professional environment.
