Mary Davies Library and Community Centre Visual Story
1. Arrival and Parking
The arrival area at Mary Davies Library and Community Centre is located within a central town square. The surrounding buildings include the library and community centre, constructed with stone and brick, large glass windows and curved rooflines. The ground surface is paved with concrete pavers, with painted games and marked pathways integrated into the layout. Trees are planted within soil beds across the paved area, providing shade. Seating is available with benches made from wood and metal, and sculptural metal features are positioned throughout the space.
The library entrance includes a step-free ramp with handrails and automatic doors. An open-air car park with bitumen surfaces is located nearby and includes two accessible car parking spaces marked in blue. This area is used for pedestrian access, seating and entry to the library and community facilities. Activity levels may increase during community events and peak times.
2. Foyer
The foyer at Mary Davies Library and Community Centre connects the rear car park and town square, linking the library, Carnaby Hall, meeting rooms and amenities. The floor surface includes concrete pavers with a central strip. Entry points include automatic glass sliding doors. The ceiling features a dome-shaped structure. Walls are constructed from a mix of brick, timber panelling and geometric cladding. The space includes an elevator with stainless steel doors, a staircase with handrails and display cabinets. The library entrance is located directly ahead, with access to Carnaby Hall on the right.
A corridor to the left provides access to additional facilities. Accessible toilets and a parent room are located along this corridor with clear signage. The accessible unisex bathroom includes an automatic door operated by a push button, a toilet with handrails, a shower with a bench seat and a baby change station. Further along is a parent room, with male and female toilets located at the end of the corridor. This area includes step-free pathways and wide doorways and is used for circulation and access to multiple services within the building.
3. Main Library
The main library is accessed from the foyer through large automatic glass sliding doors. The floor surface transitions from external concrete pavers to carpet tiles with a flecked pattern. The reception desk is positioned to the left of the entry. The space has a high sloping ceiling with a timber panel finish and large glass windows that provide natural light. Walls are constructed from brick and stone, with metal support columns throughout the area.
Bookshelves, computer desks, study spaces and seating areas are arranged across the library. The floor is carpeted, and pathways are wide and step-free. This space is used for reading, study, computer access and borrowing library materials. Activity levels may increase during weekends and events. You may hear quiet conversation and movement within the space.
4. Quiet Study Area
The quiet study area is located at the far end of the library near the Hub and is accessed through a manually operated, inward opening glass door. The external walls feature exposed red and dark brick walls and large windows. The floor inside is covered with dark grey carpet tiles with a flecked pattern. Dark timber shelving lines the internal walls, and tables with stools are arranged for study use. Lighting is provided by a combination of down lights, pendant fixtures and lamps.
This area is used for individual study and reading. Seating is arranged for single users or small groups. Activity levels are generally lower than the main library but may increase during busy periods. You may hear sound from the main library through the internal windows and open connections. Natural light enters through the windows, with lower internal lighting levels within the room.
5. The Hub
The Hub is located next to the quiet study area, adjacent to the science fiction and fantasy section of the library. Entry is through manually operated, inward opening glass doors with grey frames. The space includes red and terracotta brick walls and large windows. The ceiling is fitted with perforated panels and fluorescent lighting. The floor is covered with dark grey carpet tiles with a flecked pattern. White workbenches are arranged in the centre of the room, with storage units positioned along the walls.
Storage areas contain materials such as fabric, vinyl and craft supplies, along with equipment for printing and laminating. Step-free access is provided from the main library area. This space is used for design, making and technology-based activities, with access requiring induction. Activity levels may vary depending on scheduled sessions. You may hear equipment in use, including printers and tools within the space.
6. Carnaby Function Hall
The Carnaby Function Hall includes two adjoining rooms with glass walls and a flat ceiling that slopes upward with a timber panel finish. The floor surface varies between rooms, with grey carpet tiles in one space and timber flooring in the other. Moveable tables and chairs are stored along the walls. Entry is available through a manually operated outward opening glass door from the foyer and a separate entrance from the rear car park with a step-free threshold. The exterior includes timber cladding and paved ground surfaces.
Lighting is provided by ceiling fixtures and wall-mounted fittings. Small kitchenette areas are included within the space. This area is used for meetings, functions and community activities and can be booked through the library reception. Activity levels may increase during scheduled events. You may hear voices and movement within the space, along with occasional sounds from kitchenette use. Natural light enters through the glass panels, and the space is ventilated through ceiling air vents.
7. Boobook Children's Activity Area
The Boobook Children’s Activity Room is located beyond the foyer, past the staircase and accessible bathrooms, as the last room on the left before the courtyard. Entry is through a manually operated outward opening glass door. The indoor space includes vinyl flooring with a curved pattern, light timber wall panelling and coloured doors. The ceiling is fitted with fluorescent lighting and acoustic panels. A kitchenette and storage cabinets are positioned along one wall, and bathroom facilities are located within the room.
Large glass sliding doors connect the indoor area to a secure outdoor play space. The outdoor area includes rubber mat flooring, shade sails and fenced boundaries with gated access. Play elements include a swing and wall-mounted activity panels, along with an outdoor sink. This space is used for early childhood activities, play sessions and small group programs. Activity levels may increase during scheduled sessions.
8. Level One Meeting Rooms
The level one meeting rooms are accessed from the downstairs foyer via either the timber staircase or the elevator. On Level One, the floor surface is carpet tiles which are a mix of light and darker tones, and the walls include a patterned finish. A wide corridor leads to four rooms: Honey Eater, Wagtail, Corella and Wattle Bird. Entry to each room is through manually operated doors, with either inward opening or outward opening doors.
The Corella room includes a kitchenette with cabinets, a sink and a small fridge. Temporary partition walls allow some rooms to be combined into a larger space. Bathroom facilities are not located on this level, with accessible toilets available on the ground floor. This area is used for meetings, workshops and community activities. Lighting is provided by fluorescent fixtures throughout the space.
9. Kids Zone - Main Library
The kids zone is located at the far side of the main library. The area includes bookshelves with children’s collections and smaller-scale furniture. The floor is carpeted with patterned sections that define reading areas. Large glass windows provide natural light and views to the outdoor space. The ceiling is high with exposed steel beams and timber panels.
A manually operated inward opening glass door provides access to an outdoor area. The external space includes paved ground surfaces, shade sails and brick planter boxes. Seating is provided with wooden benches and tables. The area is enclosed by fencing and glass walls, with potted plants positioned throughout. This space is used for children’s reading and supervised activities which can include some noisy programs such as Baby Rhyme Time, Toddle Time and Story Time.
