Library+ Caloundra Visual Story
1. Arrival and Parking
Library+ Caloundra is located on Omra Avenue, adjacent to the Caloundra Regional Gallery and Caloundra Council Administration offices. Parking is available across the road, including two accessible car parking spaces marked in blue. Access to the library requires crossing the road, with step-free access from the bitumen to a smooth concrete walkway leading to the entrance. The building features a sloping white roof supported by large concrete columns. The exterior includes metal mesh screens and large glass windows. The ground surfaces around the library include bitumen, concrete, stone tiles, and timber decking.
There are planted garden beds and several trees providing shade. The entrance area has wide, step-free pathways and automatic glass sliding doors. Amenities include bike racks, a book return and collection point with a small ramp, and outdoor seating areas with tables and chairs. Activity in this area includes library access, book returns, and outdoor seating for the coffee shop. The area may have typical urban smells and feel smooth, hard surfaces underfoot with occasional shaded spots.
2. Entrance and Foyer
The entrance foyer is accessed through automatic glass sliding doors. The space includes a two-storey ceiling with timber finishes and a large wall-mounted artwork. A tiered timber seating area with stainless steel handrails is located to the left. The floor is finished with light-coloured stone tiles. Directly ahead is the entry to the library and council customer service. To the right are elevators, access to the children’s area and a café. Seating is positioned near a customer service desk on the left.
Bathroom facilities are located to the right, past the self-service borrow and return stations and adjacent to the main library entry. Along a short corridor, the female bathrooms are located first and include an ambulant toilet with grab rails. A unisex accessible bathroom is located next and includes a toilet with grab rails and a baby change table. Male bathrooms are located at the end of the corridor and include an ambulant toilet with grab rails. Lighting is provided by linear fixtures and natural light from large windows, with glass balustrades and exposed ceiling services visible on the upper level.
3. Council Customer Service
This area is located on the left-hand side upon entering the main library and is accessed via a step-free vinyl floor corridor. The space includes a customer service desk with counters and glass partitions. The ceiling has exposed services with linear strip lighting. A suspended sign above the area identifies council customer service. Seating is provided with couches and chairs positioned near a fixed desk, with shelving units located nearby.
This area connects directly to the main library and is used for customer enquiries and service transactions. You may hear conversation and movement within the space. Natural light enters through large windows, supporting visibility throughout the area.
4. Main Library - Ground Floor
This library zone is accessed by moving further along past the council customer service area on the left, with shelves for collected books positioned on the right. Additional self-service borrow stations are located at the entrance. Directly ahead is the “Library Help” area, which includes a small reception space with orange counters. Opposite the reception area are smaller reading nooks fitted with digital screens. The space also includes tables and chairs for study and group use.
The layout is open, with bookshelves with books and magazines arranged in rows and clusters. Colourful seating areas include orange, grey and yellow chairs and sofas positioned throughout the zone. Some group seating areas can be enclosed by drawing curtains around them. The ceiling has an industrial finish with exposed black-painted ducts and lighting. This area is used for reading, study, quiet work and library support, and is not a main thoroughfare through the building.
5. Children's Library - Ground Floor
This children’s area is accessed from the main reception by turning right, passing the café on the right and elevators on the left, then continuing through an open doorway. To the right of the entry are small book trolleys and seating areas for children. The space connects to adjacent areas through wide, step-free pathways.
The area includes lower bookshelves arranged in curved and circular layouts, with built-in reading nooks along the walls. The floor is carpeted with coloured sections in orange, yellow and lime green. Seating is provided with soft block-style stools and sofas in matching colours. The ceiling has exposed beams with large perforated panels and linear lighting. This area is used for children’s reading, browsing and supervised activities. Activity levels may increase during busy periods.
6. Quiet Lounge - Ground Floor
The quiet lounge is accessed from the main library, located across from the Library Help desk and behind the printing area. Entry is through a manually operated inward opening wooden door. The room is enclosed by floor-to-ceiling glass windows that provide natural light and views to the surrounding streets. The floor surface matches the main library and is carpeted. The space is separated from the library by a glass partition with patterned decals.
Seating includes couches, stools and chairs arranged with tables and side tables. Furniture finishes include upholstered seating in orange and grey tones with black and white tables. Lighting is provided by lamps and overhead fixtures. A digital screen is mounted on one wall. This area is used for reading and quiet study. Activity levels are generally low.
7. Level 1 Foyer
The level one foyer is accessed via a timber staircase with a stainless steel handrail or by elevator. The space overlooks the entrance area below and connects to the level one library, recording studios and the Ngungun room. The floor is covered with grey carpet, and the ceiling includes timber slats with spotlight lighting. Glass balustrades with metal handrails are positioned along the edges and stair openings. Seating is provided with cushioned ottomans and small tables arranged within the foyer.
A corridor located behind the elevators leads to bathroom facilities. These include female bathrooms with an ambulant toilet, a unisex accessible bathroom with a toilet with grab rails and a baby change table, and male bathrooms with an ambulant toilet. This area is used for circulation, seating and access between spaces. You may hear sound from the entrance area below, with natural light entering through nearby windows.
8. Main Library - Level 1
This library area on level one is accessed via the stairwell or elevator and entered through automatic glass sliding doors. Inside, a Library Help desk with a green finish is positioned near the entry, with a sign above identifying the service point. A return area for borrowed items is located to the right. The floor is covered with grey carpet, and the ceiling includes fluorescent lighting. Bookshelves made from timber are arranged in offset rows, with computer terminals positioned throughout the space.
Seating includes upholstered chairs and cushioned benches arranged between shelving areas. Pathways are step-free and allow movement between zones. This area is used for browsing collections, using computers and reading. You may hear quiet conversation and general library activity.
9. Meeting Rooms - Level 1
The meeting rooms are centrally located within the library floor and are enclosed by glass walls with a slight green tint and frosted sections for privacy. Entry is through manually operated inward opening doors. The glass walls provide visual connection to the surrounding library while separating the rooms from the main floor.
Inside, the floor surface changes to an earthy green carpet. Rooms are fitted with desks and chairs, with mounted flat-screen displays and audio-visual equipment. Some rooms include whiteboards and hearing loop systems. Room size, layout and external views vary. Lighting is provided by fluorescent ceiling fixtures. These spaces are used for meetings, study and group activities and can be booked through the library.
10. Studios - Level 1
The digital studios are located behind the elevators, opposite the bathrooms on level one, and are accessed via swipe entry panels at each door. Entry is through manually operated inward opening doors. The area includes two studios fitted with audio and video recording equipment and editing systems. The corridor leading to the studios has carpeted flooring and framed artwork on the walls.
Inside the studios, walls are treated with sound-reducing materials and finished with fabric panels. The floors are carpeted, and each room includes desks, microphones, speakers and wheeled chairs. One studio includes a green screen backdrop with lighting and camera equipment. These spaces are used for recording, editing and media production. Sound treatment reduces external noise, and you may hear equipment in use within the rooms.
11. Ngungun Room - Level 1
The Ngungun Room is located on level one, positioned on the corner of the building opposite the lifts. Entry is through a manually operated outward opening glass door with swipe access. The floor surface changes from carpet in the foyer to light-coloured tiles inside the room. Floor-to-ceiling mesh panels form the external walls, allowing natural light, fresh air and views across the surrounding area.
The room includes small round tables with metal mesh chairs and cushioned stools arranged for seating. This space is used for meetings, informal discussions and break periods.
