Ivanhoe Aquatic Centre Visual Story
1. Arrival and Parking
The Ivanhoe Aquatic Centre features a bright green metal façade with perforated grill panels. The building is low profile, sunken into the hillside. The surrounding car park is open-air with asphalt surfaces and has four accessible car parking spaces adjacent to the entrance. The entrance has two sets of automatic glass sliding doors under a flat white canopy.
There are several zebra crossings with red brick and white paint, connecting the car park to the entrance. Concrete footpaths with handrails and tactile ground surface indicators provide step-free access from the adjacent bus stop and parking areas. Established gum trees provide shade and define the boundaries with metal fencing and garden beds with mulch.
2. Reception and Café
This area features the reception and café with a small retail offering. Walls are painted white with lime green features in some sections. The floor is tiled throughout. The reception desk is on the left with a low-height counter and seating. Glass and stainless steel turnstiles with swipe access produces a beep sound when opened. The café area is on the left after passing through the turnstiles. A range of drinks and snacks are available to purchase.
On the right is a seating area with includes bright yellow and white chairs, blue and lime green couches, and floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Directly ahead and to the left leads to a small corridor which has a water fountain and two unisex toilets. These include a toilet with grab rails and a shower with a bench seat. Temperature changes due to air conditioning are noticeable, along with aromas of coffee and snacks.
3. Gymnasium
The gymnasium is accessed through an automatic glass sliding door from the reception and café zone. The floor is covered with dark grey rubber tiles, and the ceiling has an industrial style with black-painted utilities and cream metal grills. The space contains various exercise machines, including cardiovascular and strength equipment, arranged in rows on a rubberised floor. Large glass windows provide views into the aquatic centre below. Lockers and storage units are located near the entrance. Unisex toilets and change rooms around the corner form the lockers. Accessible bathrooms are situated outside the entrance to the gymnasium.
Mirrors line the walls, and the lighting is bright with overhead fluorescent fixtures. Movement flows along clear pathways between equipment, with activity levels likely increasing during peak hours. Sounds include weights clanking, exercise machines, and high-energy music. The smell of rubber is noticeable throughout the space.
4. Indoor Aquatic Centre
The indoor aquatic centre is located downstairs from reception and can be accessed via an elevator or stairs with handrails. The space includes a 25-metre pool, a step-free beach entry wading pool, and a programs pool. The structure features exposed steel beams painted bright yellow, with aqua blue air conditioning ducts overhead. Flooring transitions from dark tiles near the elevator and stairs to rubberised surfaces around the pools. A spa and sauna overlook the pool area and are accessed via steps and ramps with handrails. Male and female bathrooms, including toilets, showers and change rooms, are positioned beside the spa and sauna.
Accessible bathrooms and change rooms are located at the base of the stairwell and elevator. These include unisex toilets with grab rails and showers with bench seating. Baby change tables are available in this area, along with accessible on-deck showers positioned adjacent to the pool.
Lifeguards wear bright yellow and red uniforms and provide directional instructions. Vending machines and lockers are located at the base of the stairs outside the bathrooms. Bench seating is positioned throughout the space. You may hear splashing and lifeguard instructions, with activity levels increasing during swim lessons and public swim times. A chlorine smell and humidity may be noticeable.
5. Side Entrance to Studios
The side entrance to the studios feature a lime green perforated metal façade on one building and a grey painted wall on the adjacent structure. The ground surfaces are concrete with a smooth finish. A covered walkway with a translucent roof runs alongside the green façade, supported by metal poles. A narrow concrete corridor with handrails and black pool fencing runs between the two buildings.
There are bike racks and a red-lidded bin near the green façade. The corridor includes swipe card access points and a ramp with handrails. The space provides access to smaller standalone structures used for exercise studios or karate. The pathway is step-free and wheelchair accessible but narrow, with a mix of open and enclosed sections.
6. Main Studio and Karate
The building is constructed with brown brick walls and has a single-step entry through a lime green door that opens outward manually. The foyer has a concrete floor that transitions to carpet, with seating including couches. The first door on the left leads to a unisex toilet. There are no accessible bathrooms within the building.
Doors on the right provide access to the main studio, which has polished timber floorboards, mirrored walls, and exercise equipment stored along one side. A central instructor stage is finished with grey carpet, with mirrors positioned behind. The ceiling is high with exposed metal ducting and fluorescent strip lighting. Directly ahead from the entrance is a dojo known as “Lee’s Karate”, with carpeted flooring covered by blue and red interlocking mats. Lighting includes natural light through windows and overhead fluorescent lighting.
Activities include exercise classes and martial arts training, with movement between the foyer, main studio, and dojo. You may hear high-energy music and directional instructions. Body odour and glare from polished floors may be noticeable. Natural light is limited, with most lighting provided by fluorescent fixtures.
7. Functional and Barre Studio
This area consists of a low-set brick building with corrugated iron roofing in natural tones. The surrounding outdoor space includes concrete and brick pathways, which may be uneven in places, with metal railings and a covered ramp. Outdoor seating and a water fountain are positioned near the entrances, with pathways connecting to the main aquatic centre and a side entry.
The functional studio is accessed via a doorway with an inward opening door and includes carpeted flooring, mirrored walls, and a range of exercise equipment and weights. Adjacent is the barre studio, accessed via a doorway with an outward opening door, featuring carpet tiles, mirrored walls, and barres along each wall. Wall-mounted fans are positioned throughout. Two unisex bathrooms are available within this space, each including a toilet with grab rails.
8. Cycle Studio
The cycle studio is a small indoor room with dark brown brick walls and a ceiling fitted with fluorescent strip lighting. The floor is covered with black rubber matting, and bright yellow exercise bicycles are arranged in rows. Large wall-mounted industrial fans are positioned throughout the space. Colourful murals depicting cycling scenes cover the walls, and a projector with a large screen is located at one end.
Access is via a manual inward-opening glass door from the aquatic centre corridor. A water fountain is positioned outside the entrance.
