Hay Park North Pavilion Visual Story
1. Arrival and Parking
Hay Park North Pavilion is constructed with brick and metal cladding, featuring a steeply pitched metal roof. The building is elevated with concrete steps and has handrails on both sides. Surrounding the pavilion are wide, flat concrete pathways that connect to adjacent bitumen car parks. There are a total of six accessible car parking spaces marked with blue signage and separated by yellow bollards and striped zones. Three are located at one end of the building whilst the other three are located at the other end. Established gum and wattle trees provide shade near the building and along the pathways. The pavilion is positioned between two sports fields, with fencing and open grass areas around it.
The space is used for sports events and gatherings, with activity levels increasing during games or weekends. Visitors may hear sounds of sports play and vehicles in the car parks. The area may have natural scents from the surrounding trees and grass. The concrete and bitumen surfaces feel firm and flat underfoot, with tactile tiles near the building entrance. Benches are available near the pavilion and along pathways for resting. The open fields and shaded areas create a mix of sun and shadow throughout the day.
2. North Pavillion - Change Rooms
The pavilion features four changing rooms, two on each side, facing the AFL and rugby fields. The building is constructed with brick and dark corrugated metal cladding, with blue doors and wooden slat privacy screens positioned at the entrance to each changing room. Concrete steps and a ramp with handrails provide step-free access to the covered verandah that runs along the building. Each changing room is accessed via a manual inward opening door.
Inside, there is a large open space with blue wooden bench seating running around the perimeter of the room, along with coat hooks. Two hand basins with soap and paper towels are provided within the main area. An open doorway leads through to the adjoining toilets and showers. The area is lit by ceiling lights and natural light through small windows and skylights. These spaces are used for team and player changeover and may experience increased activity levels during games and training. Public accessible toilets are also available nearby.
3. North Pavillion - Len Nisbett Social Space
The Les Nisbett Social Space is a single-storey building with walls and windows framed in dark metal trim. It includes a large wrap-around veranda with a concrete floor and metal posts supporting a wide roof overhang. The veranda features metal handrails and bench seating along its length. Multiple outward-opening manual doors provide access to the internal area, which has grey vinyl flooring and high ceilings with recessed lighting. Windows overlook the adjacent sports fields.
Accessible and ambulant bathrooms are located at one end of the building via a blue doorway marked “Toilets”. The first door on the left leads to the accessible bathroom, which includes a toilet with grab rails, a shower with a bench seat, and a baby change table. Entry to this room is activated by a wave-to-open system. The next room on the left is the female bathroom, which includes three toilets, one of which is an ambulant toilet with grab rails. This is followed by the male bathroom, which also includes three toilets, including one ambulant toilet with grab rails. An external exit is located at the end of this corridor.
The building connects to a paved pathway and nearby parking area. The space is used for meetings, social gatherings, and by visiting sports teams. Activity levels may increase during events or weekends, with sounds of conversation, food service, and cheering common. Food aromas may be present from the kitchen area. The veranda provides shaded seating with views of the sports fields. The internal space is climate controlled with air conditioning.
4. AFL Fields
This area is located on the eastern side of the North Pavilion and includes five AFL and cricket fields. The fields have grass surfaces, with central cricket pitches made of a harder, worn material. AFL goalposts with four vertical posts are positioned at each end. The site is open with minimal tree cover and is bordered by roads and parking areas, including nearby accessible car parking spaces.
The space is used for AFL and cricket matches, with activity levels increasing during sports seasons. Sounds may include referee whistles, crowd noise, and the impact of cricket balls and bats. The area is exposed to wind and traffic noise due to limited tree cover. The grass surface is soft underfoot, and the nearby pavilion provides shaded seating and shelter from sun and rain.
5. Rugby Fields
This area is located on the western side of the North Pavilion, featuring two rectangular rugby fields with rugby posts at each end. The fields have flat, soft grass surfaces with a bright green colour. One field includes tall lighting towers for night games. Surrounding the fields are established gum trees that provide shade and reduce wind exposure. Concrete and bitumen paths connect the pavilion to the fields, with steps and handrails leading down to the grass.
The fields are used for rugby matches and training, with activity levels increasing during games and events. Sounds may include referees' whistles, crowd cheers, and players' movements. The presence of trees may cause rustling leaves and occasional bird calls. The grass surface may feel soft underfoot, and the open sky allows for natural light and occasional wind. Nearby paths provide firm walking surfaces for spectators and participants.
