Currimundi Special School Visual Story
1. Arrival Administration Entrance
The entrance to Currimundi Special School includes concrete pathways, fences and gates, with low-set trees providing shade. The buildings have a modern design and colourful features. Step-free access is available from the car park to the entrance.
Four accessible car parking spaces are located adjacent to the entry area from the on-street parking. The street can be busy during school drop-off and pick-up times. You may hear cars passing, children talking and occasional dog walkers nearby. This area is mainly used for student arrivals, departures and administration access.
2. Administration
The entrance to the administration building features large glass windows with blue panels and a glass sliding door. A small garden and two bench seats are located near the entry. The exterior is constructed from concrete and glass. Stairs and a ramp both lead to the entrance, allowing for step-free access.
Inside, there is red carpet flooring, a colourful wall mural and fluorescent lighting. Reception and administration are on the left, where staff assist visitors. On the right, couches are available for waiting. This area is used for visitor enquiries, sign-in and student administration.
3. Industrial Technology and Design
The Industrial Technology and Design area is accessed by turning right from the administration building following and undercover walkway. Entering Block O through manual outward opening glass doors to an enclosed walkway. Inside the space includes a wide corridor with blue solid flooring and handrails along the walls. The Industrial Technology classroom has high arched ceilings, wooden benches and equipment for design and 3D printing activities.
Teachers provide instruction, and students work on practical projects. Activities may involve standing, moving between benches and using equipment. This area is used for technology and design learning sessions.
4. Sensory Outdoor Learning Area
The Sensory Outdoor Learning Area is located directly outside the administration building and includes a small, enclosed playground. It features swings, playground equipment and sand pits set on soft rubber surfaces and surrounded by small grassed areas. A yellow fence and gate enclose the space.
Shade sails, an awning and nearby trees provide overhead cover. The structures are made from practical materials such as metal and solid plastics. Ramps and wide pathways support step-free access and easy navigation. This area is used for outdoor play, sensory activities and supervised learning sessions.
5. Early Year Classrooms
The Early Year Classrooms overlook the Sensory Outdoor Learning Area and are accessed via covered concrete walkways. The building is constructed from brick and includes wide corridors with handrails. Doors are manually operated. Flooring transitions from vinyl to carpet, providing a change in surface underfoot.
Each classroom includes dedicated learning spaces, a breakout sensory room and an outdoor courtyard. Fully accessible change bathroom facilities are available. This area is used for early learning activities, sensory play and supervised outdoor sessions.
6. Resource Centre
The Resource Centre, also known as the library, is accessed via stairs or a ramp with handrails, providing step-free access. The exterior includes a covered walkway with metal railings leading to the entrance. Inside, the space has carpeted flooring with fluorescent lighting and ceiling fans.
The library contains shelves with books, toys and games, along with brightly coloured furniture and several breakout areas. Couches and seating areas are positioned near moveable book trolleys. Artwork is displayed on the walls. This area is used for reading, study sessions and small group learning activities.
7. Upper Primary
H Block is a modern, light blue, two-level building located at the rear of the campus. It includes wide corridors with timber parquet flooring. Stairs and an elevator provide access to both levels. Classrooms are positioned along the corridors, with accessible facilities located nearby. The classrooms vary in layout and purpose.
One classroom includes a small kitchenette. Another includes soft matting and play equipment. One learning space is located outdoors under an awning with a swing and picnic tables. A designated Calm Corner includes soft lighting, comfortable chairs and soft toys. This area is used for upper primary learning, group work and supervised activities.
8. Parent Pickup
The dedicated off-street parent pick-up area is located at the rear of the school. It includes a covered carport constructed from corrugated iron with blue support structures. Gardens and trees surround the space. Yellow markings on the concrete indicate parking and no-parking zones.
Signs and painted artwork are displayed on fences and on the ground. The layout supports vehicle access onto school grounds. This area is used for supervised student collection, with teachers and carers assisting children to and from vehicles during pick-up times.
9. Junior Secondary
Block C, also known as Junior Secondary, is a two-storey building centrally located on campus and accessed via covered walkways. The building includes manual doors and wide corridors with cream-coloured vinyl flooring. Stairs and a lift provide access to both levels. The corridors have brightly coloured walls with handrails.
Classrooms include individual tables, formal seating, fluorescent lighting, ceiling fans and a kitchenette. Each classroom contains a quiet space with changing arrangements of comfortable seating and soft toys. An outdoor veranda supports interactive learning activities.
The dedicated gymnasium features marine-themed wall art and includes treadmills, exercise bikes and other gym equipment. This area is used for secondary learning and physical activity sessions.
10. Seniors Secondary
The Senior Secondary area is accessed via a covered walkway with a timber boardwalk finish leading to a central common space. This area includes café-style tables and chairs, bean bags and hanging hammocks. Classrooms are positioned on either side.
One classroom includes tables and chairs surrounded by pin boards displaying notices and student artwork, along with tubs for class work. An area known as “Mini Enterprise” includes a laptop and printer. A small kitchen with an oven, microwave and fridge is also available in a separate break out space.
The open layout and clear pathways support easy navigation. This area is used for senior secondary lessons, independent study and supervised break times.
11. Hall and Living Skills
The Hall and Living Skills area is a multi-purpose space with a modern design. It includes a large hall with a stage that has ramp access. Ceiling fans and air-conditioning are installed throughout the space. The structure incorporates brick and metal elements with high ceilings and an open interior.
A dedicated kitchen area is equipped with ovens, stovetops, benches and washing facilities for catering and cooking education. Ramps and wide pathways support step-free access. This area is used for school assemblies, presentations, events and structured learning activities.
12. Pool
The aquatic centre is a standalone facility located at the rear of the campus and includes a small indoor heated pool. The building has a high industrial-style roofline with louvered windows that allow natural light and ventilation. Access is through outward opening doors, with dedicated changing rooms and bathroom facilities available.
The pool includes ramp access for step-free entry. Colourful bunting and an Australian flag are displayed above the pool area. This space is used for swimming lessons and therapy sessions. Increased humidity and a noticeable chlorine smell may be present. Raised garden beds are located outside the pool building.
13. Bike Track
The bike track at Currimundi Special School is designed for practising road skills. It includes a smooth concrete pathway that winds through a dedicated outdoor area surrounded by grass and trees. Metal railings and gates define the boundaries of the space.
Traffic lights and road signs are installed to simulate road conditions. The wide pathways support bicycle access and safe movement. This area is used for cycling practice and learning road rules, including right-of-way procedures.
14. Bus Zone
The Bus Zone is a covered area located near the front of the school and operates with a dedicated one-way traffic flow for buses. The structure includes metal roofing and concrete flooring designed for durability and weather protection. Park-bench style seating in various colours is available for students waiting for transport.
Clear pathways and separate bus entry and exit points support organised vehicle movement. This area is used for student arrival and departure, with staff supervising during bus loading and unloading times.
15. Beach Access
Beach Access is via a 50-metre step-free concrete walkway shaded by mature trees, leading to a boardwalk that descends toward the beach. The path is lined with pandanus trees, forming a natural canopy. The walkway has a slight incline as it approaches the sand dunes.
The beach is directly adjacent to the school. A seating area with fixed wooden stools provides a place to sit and view the coastline. This area is used for supervised beach visits and outdoor activities during the school day. You may hear the sound of waves from the nearby shoreline.
