Cooroy Library Visual Story
1. Arrival and Parking
Arriving at the Cooroy Library, visitors will enter the Mill Place Community Precinct and park in the shared car parking area. Four accessible car parking spaces are available within the precinct. A step-free transition is provided from the asphalt car park to a concrete pathway leading toward the library entrance. The library is located on the right-hand side as you enter the precinct, with pedestrian crossings and pathways connecting the parking areas to the building.
The Cooroy Library is a curved building constructed from concrete, steel and glass, with timber detailing incorporated into the design. The precinct includes a combination of asphalt and concrete surfaces, with bollards and paved pathways supporting movement throughout the area. Established trees, including pines and fig trees, surround the precinct and provide shade in various locations. The library is positioned amongst other community facilities within the Mill Place precinct.
This area is used for access to the library and surrounding community facilities. Activity levels may increase during weekends, school holidays and community events. You may hear children playing in the nearby playground, vehicles moving through the car park and activity from surrounding businesses. The aromas of nearby cafés may also be noticeable in parts of the precinct.
2. Entrance and Circulation Desk
The Cooroy Library is accessed through automatic glass sliding doors that open into a wide entrance corridor. Immediately inside the entrance, a white pillar on the right marks a corridor leading to the bathroom facilities. Along this corridor, the first door on the left is the male toilets, followed by an accessible bathroom with a manually operated inward-opening door, a toilet with grab rails and a baby change table. The next door on the left leads to the female toilets. Returning to the main entrance corridor, the library returns section is located on the left-hand side. Continuing ahead leads into the main library, with the customer service desk positioned centrally at the end of the corridor.
The floor transitions from external concrete pathways to timber flooring inside the building, with carpet matting positioned near the entrance. The customer service area is centred around a curved timber desk, with self-service kiosks located nearby. Large glass windows provide natural light throughout the space. The ceiling is light coloured with recessed lighting, and decorative architectural features are incorporated throughout the entry area.
This area is used for customer service, library memberships, enquiries and circulation activities. Activity levels may increase during weekends, school holidays and library events. The environment is air-conditioned, and you may hear footsteps on the different floor surfaces, conversations between visitors and staff, and the operation of self-service kiosks.
3. Community Spaces
Upon entering the main library and moving past the customer service desk, turn left to access the community spaces area. As you walk toward this section, the Noosa Seed Library is located on the right. On the left is a large open area containing couches, book displays and a section with white tables and black chairs used for quiet collaboration, board games and other activities. Public computers are also available in this area for browsing the library catalogue and accessing online resources.
The community spaces feature a combination of timber flooring, carpet tiles and entry matting that help define different areas within the library. Large windows provide natural light throughout the space, while concrete pillars, bookshelves and seating areas create informal zones for different activities. The area has a high ceiling with angular lighting fixtures and an open layout that connects with the surrounding library collections.
This area is used for reading, studying, informal meetings, board games and community activities. A range of seating options is available, including upholstered armchairs, couches, plastic chairs and tables. Public computers are available for library and internet access. Activity levels may increase during weekends, school holidays and library events. You may hear conversation, computer use and general library activity from surrounding areas.
4. Main Library
From the customer service desk, move to the left and continue into the main library. The community spaces are located on the left-hand side, while the Quick Picks collection, Seed Library and Large Print collection are positioned on the right. Continuing further ahead, the audio collection is located on the right, with the magazine collection and additional book collections on the left. Bookshelves and library collections continue throughout the space, with pathways connecting the various sections of the library.
The main library features a combination of timber flooring and dark carpet tiles that define different collection and seating areas. Bookshelves are arranged throughout the space, with reading nooks and display areas positioned between collections. The ceiling is high and incorporates geometric hanging decorations, while large clerestory windows provide natural light. Concrete pillars are positioned throughout the library, and a prominent yellow and orange feature wall is located on the right-hand side of the space.
This area is used for reading, studying, browsing collections and accessing library resources. Seating areas are available throughout the library for reading and quiet activities. Activity levels may increase during weekends, school holidays and library events. You may hear conversation, movement between collections and general library activity. Natural light, high ceilings and open sightlines contribute to the overall character of the space.
5. Quiet Study Area
The quiet study area is located near the customer service desk, behind the Quick Picks and Noosa Seed Library collections. The space is positioned along the library's external glass wall, overlooking the surrounding gardens. Seating and study areas are arranged throughout the space, with books and displays positioned nearby.
Large floor-to-ceiling windows provide views of the landscaped gardens and allow natural light into the area. The space includes a combination of carpet and timber flooring, along with a range of seating options including a lounge, tables and chairs for reading, studying or working. Bookshelves and display shelving are positioned around the perimeter of the area, while concrete columns and high windows connect the space visually with the wider library.
This area is used for reading, studying, working on laptops and other quiet activities. Activity levels are generally lower than in other parts of the library, although they may increase during busy periods. You may hear light conversation, page turning, keyboard use and general library activity from surrounding areas. Natural light and garden views contribute to the character of the space.
6. Children's Area and Courtyard
The children's area is located toward the far end of the library. From the customer service desk, continue through the main library, passing the community spaces and adult collections. The area is identified by large yellow feature walls with organic flower-shaped cut-outs. Moving past these yellow features and into the children's section, books and DVD collections are positioned along the wall on the right, while lower child-height bookshelves are arranged throughout the space. Continuing further into the area leads to additional children's collections, seating and direct access to the adjoining courtyard through outward-opening glass doors.
The children's area features a combination of timber flooring, carpet tiles and floor matting. Lower bookshelves create smaller browsing zones suited to children, while couches and soft seating are positioned throughout the space. A small play kitchen and interactive play elements are also available. Large windows provide natural light and views of the surrounding bushland. The adjoining courtyard includes tables and chairs, a small play area and a sink. The courtyard surface consists of firm rubber flooring and artificial grass, with surrounding landscaping providing a natural backdrop.
This area is used for children's reading, play, storytelling activities and family visits to the library. The courtyard provides an additional outdoor space for library programs and informal activities. Activity levels may increase during children's programs, school holidays and library events. You may hear conversation, children playing, storytelling activities and general library activity. Natural light, colourful design features and views of the surrounding gardens contribute to the character of the space.
7. Mill Place and Young Adult Area
From the customer service desk, turn right and continue past the Reservations collection, where library items that have been reserved can be collected. Computer workstations are located on the left-hand side of the corridor. Continuing further ahead and to the left leads to Mill Place, a glass-enclosed space accessed through a sliding glass door. Inside, the floor transitions from timber flooring to carpet tiles and includes a variety of seating options. A door at the rear of the room provides access to the adjoining courtyard. Returning to the corridor and continuing ahead, the Young Adult area is located on the left and is also accessed through a sliding glass door. This space contains young adult collections, seating areas and a door leading to the courtyard.
Mill Place and the Young Adult area are enclosed by floor-to-ceiling glass walls that provide visibility throughout the spaces while maintaining separation from the main library. Flooring consists of carpet tiles, with timber flooring continuing through the surrounding circulation areas. The spaces include a variety of seating options, tables and work areas. Large windows and glass doors allow natural light into both rooms and provide views of the courtyard and surrounding gardens.
These areas are used for reading, studying, community programs, informal meetings and library activities. The Young Adult area contains collections specifically for young readers, while Mill Place provides flexible space for individual and group use. Activity levels may increase during library programs, community events and school holiday activities. You may hear conversation, computer use and general library activity from adjacent spaces, while natural light and garden views contribute to the character of the area.
8. Main Courtyard
The main courtyard is located beyond the customer service desk and can be accessed through a series of outward-opening glass doors. The transition from the library to the courtyard is step-free, with flooring changing from carpet tiles inside the library to artificial turf outdoors. Multiple access points connect the courtyard to the library, allowing movement between the indoor reading areas and the outdoor space.
The courtyard follows the curved design of the library building and is bordered by large glass walls on one side and a landscaped embankment on the other. The surface is covered with artificial turf and includes a central raised planter box containing established trees and garden beds. Additional planting extends along the high retaining wall, creating a green backdrop throughout the space. Moveable tables and plastic chairs are positioned around the courtyard, providing a variety of seating options. The surrounding glass walls allow views back into the library and provide natural light throughout the area.
This area is used for reading, studying, informal meetings and library programs. Activity levels may increase during library events, community programs and school holiday activities. You may hear conversation from nearby library spaces, birds and other sounds from the surrounding gardens. The outdoor setting, landscaped gardens and open-air environment provide a different sensory experience to the enclosed library spaces.
9. Meeting Rooms
The meeting rooms are located within different areas of the library. From the customer service desk, move into the main library and continue past the Quick Picks, Seed Library and audio collection on the right-hand side. Further along, a glass sliding door marked Group Study provides access to a small meeting room. This room contains a central table with chairs and is separated from the main library by glass walls. Returning to the corridor and continuing a short distance further, the Parents Room is located on the right-hand side. At the opposite end of the library, across from the Young Adult area, is the Community Access room, which provides a larger meeting and program space.
The meeting rooms feature carpet tile flooring, white walls and lower ceilings than the main library spaces. The Group Study room includes a table, chairs and presentation equipment suitable for small meetings and collaborative work. The Community Access room contains moveable tables and chairs, storage cupboards and a small kitchenette with bench space, cupboards and appliances. Glass walls and doors allow natural light into many of the meeting spaces while maintaining separation from the main library areas.
These spaces are used for meetings, workshops, community programs, study groups and library activities. Activity levels vary depending on bookings and scheduled events. During organised programs, visitors may hear conversations, presentations and group discussions. When not in use, the rooms generally provide a quieter environment than the main library spaces.

11. Rooftop Garden
The rooftop garden is located above the library and can be reached via the large staircase on the right-hand side of the building. At the top of the stairs, a pathway to the right leads to an art installation, while turning left leads into the rooftop garden area. Vehicle access is also available to the upper level via the adjacent roadway and parking area. The rooftop garden is an open grassed space positioned above the library, offering elevated views across the surrounding precinct.
The area features a large lawn bordered by landscaped gardens, mature trees and rock-lined garden beds. The surface consists primarily of grass, with concrete pathways and stairs connecting different areas. A safety railing runs around the perimeter of the rooftop level. The space is open to the sky and includes tiered concrete seating adjacent to the stairway. Surrounding vegetation and elevated positioning provide views across Cooroy township and the surrounding landscape.
This space is used for relaxation, community gatherings and occasional events. Activity levels may increase during community functions, markets or special events. As an outdoor location, visitors may experience changing weather conditions including sun, wind and rain. Sounds from nearby cafés, community spaces, traffic and birdlife may be noticeable. The elevated setting and open environment provide a different sensory experience to the enclosed library spaces below.
