Pelican Park Recreation Centre Visual Story
1. Arrival and Parking
The Pelican Park Recreation Centre is located adjacent to the Western Port Marina and shoreline. It is accessed from a car park with three accessible car spaces directly in front of the main entrance and additional accessible spaces nearby. A concrete pathway runs alongside the building, connecting the car park to the entrance and surrounding areas.
The entrance features automatic glass sliding doors with a section of tactile flooring outside. Concrete steps with yellow safety markings and handrails provide an alternative access route. The building has a curved façade with large glass windows and a metal canopy overhead. Landscaping includes low bushes and grasses along the pathways.
Activity in the area includes visitors moving between the car park, the recreation reserve, and nearby marina or jetty. Sensory elements include ocean and salty air, occasional bird sounds, and food aromas from a nearby café.
2. Entrance and Reception
Entry is through two sets of automatic glass sliding doors. Inside, a glass wall separates the foyer from the pool area. The reception desk and glass turnstiles are located on the left side. The turnstiles provide access through to the changerooms and aquatic facilities. A low-height countertop with chairs is available at reception for class or membership sign-ups.
On the right, a retail area displays swimming goggles, costumes and other swimming accessories. The floor surface changes from concrete outside to grey tile carpet inside. The space is air-conditioned, with a noticeable temperature drop and a chlorine smell. Electronic beeps from swipe passes and conversations about memberships may be heard in this area.
3. Central Corridors and Amenities
This area is accessed after passing through the glass turnstiles to the left of the reception desk. The corridors lead to the gymnasium, aquatic centre, and health studios. The first corridor on the right leads to the aquatic centre. Located in this corridor is a family change room, unisex toilets with grab rails and baby change station, unisex showers with a baby change station, and a number of individual change rooms. At the end of this corridor is a unisex bathroom that has a toilet and shower with grab rails as well as an adult changing table and hoist. To access this bathroom, push the green button and the door will open.
Back in the main corridor and further along, male and female toilets are located on the right. At the end of this corridor on the left is another unisex bathroom with a toilet and shower with handrails and bench seating. The corridors serve as thoroughfares with people moving purposefully between areas. The corridor walls are white-painted concrete blocks decorated with large black and white sporting murals. Flooring consists of grey vinyl and carpet in different sections.
This space is used for transit between facilities and changing. Activity levels may increase during peak times or events. You may hear footsteps and voices echoing in the corridor. The tiled bathrooms may have echoes of running water. The area may have a mild chlorine smell near the aquatic centre. Surfaces feel smooth, with vinyl and tile flooring.
4. Aquatic Centre
This indoor aquatic centre features a pitched roof with exposed white metal beams and skylights. The main 25-metre lap pool is rectangular with lane ropes and includes ramped and stepped entries with stainless steel handrails. A Pelican pool and spa hoist is positioned at the far end near the spa, with the steam room and adults-only spa located in the far corner. Lockers are available within this space. Large glass walls provide views of the Recreation Reserve and gymnasium, while bright fluorescent lighting and ceiling ventilation ducts run throughout. Bench seating is positioned along the perimeter of the pool area.
Adjacent to the lap pool is a shallow toddlers’ pool with a pelican-shaped slide and water features, along with a nearby splash pad with water jets. Aquatic wheelchairs are available for use. The environment is humid with a noticeable chlorine smell, and sounds may include water splashing, swimming instructions, and lifeguard whistles. Activity levels may increase during swim lessons or public sessions.
5. Gymnasium
This gymnasium is located at the far end of the central corridors, accessed via a left turn leading to the entrance. Lockers are positioned nearby, along with access to the aquatic centre. The space shares a pitched roof with skylights and bright fluorescent lighting, similar to the adjacent aquatic centre visible through large windows. Flooring transitions from light grey vinyl in the corridor to darker grey carpet with blue flecks inside the gym, with a light green carpet strip along one side for exercise areas. The gym includes rows of treadmills, exercise bikes, rowing machines, and weight equipment, with white walls, mounted TVs, and wall fans for ventilation.
Activity levels may increase during peak periods, with people engaged in exercise and occasional coaching instructions. Sounds may include treadmill running, bike movement, weights clanging, music, and TV audio. The environment may feel warm and humid due to physical activity, with possible smells including carpet fabric, sports ointments, and body odours.
6. Health Studios
The health studios are located at the far end of the central corridor, around the corner from the gymnasium. The corridor leads to two separate rooms: a sauna and ice bath rehabilitation room, and a Pilates studio. The first door on the left opens into the sauna and ice bath room, which features tiled walls and floors, two white rectangular ice baths, and two infrared saunas. A small shelving unit holds storage boxes and rolled towels, with a shower positioned adjacent to the saunas.
Further along the corridor, the next door on the left leads to the Pilates studio. This space includes multiple reformer machines arranged in rows, with white walls, large mirrors, and a black-and-white mural. Lighting is provided by overhead linear LED fixtures.
Access throughout this zone is step-free via a corridor with dark carpet flooring, transitioning to tiled floors in the sauna and ice bath room, and polished wooden floorboards in the Pilates studio. Activity is generally calm, with people engaging in rehabilitation, relaxation, or Pilates exercises. Sounds may include low ventilation noise and occasional water movement from the ice baths.
7. Recreation Reserve
The Recreation Reserve is located behind the Recreation Centre, surrounded by parkland with views of the water. Six accessible car parking spaces marked in blue are positioned adjacent to this area, with concrete pathways connecting the car park to the playground and skate park. The playground is fenced with colourful metal panels and includes a Liberty Swing that can be used by people in wheelchairs. Access to the swing requires a ‘Liberty Swing Key’, available from Pelican Park reception. A second play area nearby includes sandpits, swings, slides, and a communication board.
Adjacent to the playground is a skate park with concrete ramps and rails. Ground surfaces across the area include concrete, gravel, and wood mulch. Established trees provide shade around the playground, while the main car park has limited shade. Male and female toilets, along with an accessible public bathroom with a toilet and handrails, are located nearby. The area overlooks a waterway, with sailing boats visible in the distance.
