Lakeside Leisure Centre Visual Story
1. Arrival and Parking
The Lakeside Leisure Centre car park is accessed via Anketell Street. A pedestrian crossing connects the bus stop to the Leisure Centre entrance. Six accessible car parking spaces are located near the front of the facility. Step-free ramps link the asphalt car park to concrete walkways leading to the building.
The car park is surrounded by mature trees that provide shade and is lit by multiple lighting towers. The Leisure Centre entrance features a covered concrete platform with brick steps and handrails. The area includes paved pathways, brick retaining walls, and bollards separating pedestrian and vehicle zones.
Movement includes slow-moving cars and people in sporting or swimming attire. The ground surface is mainly asphalt with concrete walkways and pedestrian crossings. The environment includes the smell of cut grass and mulch, and the crunch of gravel underfoot.
2. Entrance and Reception
Access into the entrance of the leisure centre is via two sets of automatic glass sliding doors. The first set of doors open into a small vestibule with a varnished wooden floor, followed by a second set of sliding doors into the main reception. The reception desk is positioned on the left side with a low-height counter. A central corridor extends from the reception, providing access to the aquatic centre, gymnasium, and exercise studios.
On the right, a glass sliding door leads to the hydrotherapy pool. The interior features varnished wooden floorboards, white walls, and a corrugated metal ceiling with multiple ceiling lights and fans. The space includes retail displays with swimwear and accessories. The area is enclosed by blue walls, with large windows along the corridor.
Activity includes staff interactions and equipment use, with ambient sounds of computers and beeping devices. Temperature changes from outside to air-conditioned inside, and a chlorine scent may be noticeable near the pool entrance.
3. Indoor Aquatic Centre
The indoor aquatic centre is accessed by moving down the corridor from reception and turning right through automatic glass sliding doors. The floor changes from varnished timber to cream-coloured tiles, with a light blue wall on the left. The corridor slopes down to the pool deck level, moving past the Lakeside Café on the right. Directly ahead and to the left is the 50-metre, eight lane indoor heated pool which can be accessed by either the ladder or steps with handrails. Coloured, tiered seating is available for spectators. To the right of the 50-metre pool is the program pools with beach-style step-free access, with the toddler pool located across from the programs pool.
This space has a large dome-shaped roof with suspended blue air conditioning vents. Natural light enters through windows and ceiling lights. Accessible bathrooms and change rooms are available from the pool deck. The environment features tiled floors and walls, metal handrails, and seating areas including a café with tables and chairs. Pool lanes are marked with signs, and the area includes safety signage and pool rules. Activity levels may increase during swim sessions or events. You may hear water splashing and announcements. Humidity and chlorine smell may be present.
4. Outdoor Splashpark
The outdoor splash park is located beyond the indoor aquatic centre, past the programs pool. Access is via an outward opening, manually operated door leading to a flat concrete surface that resembles a natural courtyard. The area features a water play zone with multiple fountain features under large blue and green shade sails supported by tall red poles. The splash pad is surrounded by curved yellow concrete seating.
Adjacent to the splash pad is flat grassland with mature trees and white bench seating. Concrete pathways connect the splash pad to the aquatic centre and surrounding parkland. The space is used for water play and informal recreation, with water splashing sounds from the fountains. You may hear rustling leaves, birds, and children playing.
5. Gymnasium and Exercise Studio
The gymnasium and exercise studio are accessed from reception by turning left along a corridor, passing the aquatic centre entrance on the right. The corridor has a varnished timber floor and leads to both spaces on the left via a slight ramp with handrails. The gymnasium is the first door on the left, accessed through manual outward-opening glass doors that are typically left open. Storage units are positioned to the right of the entry. Inside, the walls are white, and the ceiling is corrugated metal with strip lighting and ceiling fans. The floor is covered with grey rubber tile matting, and equipment includes weight machines, cardio machines, benches, and free weights.
Continuing along the corridor past a central office on the left, the next door leads into the exercise studio. The flooring combines timber parquet and carpet tiles. A central stage area is positioned for instructors, with mirrors behind, and exercise equipment is arranged along the walls. Male and female bathrooms are located across the corridor adjacent to the gymnasium and exercise studio, each including an ambulant toilet with grab rails.
Activity levels may increase during peak hours. Sounds may include cardio equipment, footsteps, clanging weights, and high-energy music.
6. Hydrotherapy Pool
The hydrotherapy pool is located to the right of the entrance, adjacent to reception, and is accessed through a glass sliding door requiring a swipe pass. The pool has a shallow end of 0.9 metres and a deep end of 1.6 metres, with the water temperature maintained at 34 degrees. The walls and ceiling are white, and the floor is finished with a combination of light grey and brown tiles.
Access to the pool is available via steps with handrails or a ramp with handrails. A Pelican hoist and aquatic wheelchairs are also available. Bench seating is positioned at either end of the pool. A unisex bathroom is located at the entrance and includes a shower with a bench seat and a toilet with grab rails. Adjacent is a Changing Places facility, which includes an adult change table, a shower with bench seating, a toilet with grab rails, and a ceiling hoist. Male and female amenities, including toilets, showers, and change rooms, are located at the far end of the pool and include an ambulant toilet with grab rails.
The environment has increased temperature and humidity, with a noticeable chlorine scent due to the warm water. Activity in this space is generally focused on rehabilitation and aquatic therapy, with step-free access and support equipment facilitating movement and use.
7. Central Change Rooms and Amenities
This change facility is centrally located within the Lakeside Leisure Centre and is accessible from multiple points, including the pool deck near the 50-metre lap pool. Separate male and female sections are provided, each with a similar layout and orientation. Entrance areas transition from timber-look flooring in the hallways to light grey tiled flooring within the change rooms, with the tiled surface continuing from the main pool deck. Walls are painted white, with sections of exposed brick, and ceilings include both strip and round lighting.
Inside, one section includes rows of shower stalls. Further in, a large open area provides bench seating, hooks for hanging clothes, and hand basins. Beyond this is another section with rows of toilet stalls, including an ambulant toilet with grab rails. Adjacent to the female bathrooms are two accessible unisex bathrooms, each including a shower with bench seating and a toilet with grab rails.
This space is used as the main change facility for the gymnasium, exercise rooms, and pool areas. Activity levels may increase during peak times. Sounds may include echoes of footsteps and voices, and humidity may be present due to the proximity to the pool.
