Who is Cérge and what does Cérge do?
Cérge is a set of companion technologies delivering societal change ensuring we are all more welcoming and inclusive of disability.

A lack of publicly available accessible information and inadvertent discriminatory customer service are the two biggest yet easily solved Social Barriers to community participation, sport & leisure and accessible tourism for up to 1 in 5 people.
Accessible Information...
With increasing impairment comes an increased requirement for publicly available information to make an informed decision about a destination's accessibility and sensory experience.
Fears of "getting it wrong" or "not knowing where to start" hold many business owners from promoting their existing accessible and sensory experiences publicly on their websites.

Customer Service
The greatest source of discrimination for people with disability is from service and hospitality staff. Importantly, this is not deliberate but inadvertent.
With Over 70%
of all disability being invisible and each disability unique to each person, service and hospitality staff are left to guess and lack the confidence to deliver empathetic service to customers with disability.
The Cérge Companion App provides service staff the confidence to ensure empathetic customer service and deliver meaningful social impact.

Cérge Companion Websites
The Cérge Companion Websites are a plug and play solution for a venue or destination to make a stepped change in the publicly available information detailing accessible and sensory experience imagery and descriptions.
An immediate and significant uplift in publicly available information empowers customers with disability, parents, carers and support workers to make an informed decision before arrival.
Designed to link directly from a company’s website, the Cérge Companion Website contains:
Visual Story & Sensory Guide
Access Guide
Virtual Tour
Audio Guide powered by A.I.
Keyword Sign Board
Communication Board
Cérge Companion App
Imagine having your own personal disability and mental health advocate in your pocket to ensure you receive warm and empathetic customer service whilst participating in local community, sport, and whilst traveling.
The Cérge Companion App is a free assistive technology for individuals with disability, support worker, carers, and parents to notify a participating destination/venue of specific service preferences ahead of time and remove the fears and anxiety of how you or your loved ones will be treated.
Discreet messaging from app direct to the venue empowers customer service staff with complete confidence and knowledge to ensure an inclusive experience.

I generally only go places that I have been or the person who I am going with has been. That way someone is familiar with the surroundings and layout. Having Cerge meant that I could get an idea of the layout and my anxiety was under control because I knew where exits were and what to expect. The Visual Story and Virtual tour were definitely two tools that I would use on a daily basis if Cerge was everywhere. I have an invisible disability so people don’t understand the lack of eye contact or when I become flustered or forget my manners. Sometimes I say things that aren’t quiet socially acceptable but it’s because unknown place and people make me feel quite nervous. I was able to use the app today and let the staff know at the Kingston Butter Factory these key points about me and that made me feel so much comfortable before arrival because I knew the assumptions and judgements were taken out of the equation. Today at Kingston Butter Factory it was a really quiet day we were some of the few people visiting. We had a great opportunity to look at the art works and explore the space. Staff member Dan showed us around all of the spaces to make me feel more comfortable. He explained what happened in each of the rooms and the other people I might see upstairs and who they were and their roles within the organisation. He had a very calm demeanour and was very helpful. After we left I felt very happy. Not exhausted like I normally do after leaving somewhere. This is probably due to less anxiety and the fact that is was quiet and we were able to look around at our own pace. Outings usually deplete me greatly so I can tend to avoid them, where as today I left feeling more energy! Bonus! Having an invisible disability makes it hard for people to understand why I can’t cope with noises and movement. Also knowing that I wouldn’t have an access issue with my NCAA (non canine assistance animal) made it so much easier. Confrontation can bring on a panic attack and knowing that they were accepting was awesome. So many families with children need this app even if it’s just for the Visual Stories to help them know what to expect. The difference for families would be incredible. I would love to see Cérge at more CAFE’s, museums and art galleries in Brisbane City and near me. I’d probably be able to enjoy a full day out if it was like this!

Truthfully, as a parent of a child with ASD it takes planning. The mental load can often be the thing that breaks me. Thinking, planning, preventing, pre-empting and the plot twists.
For me, it’s all about calculating his level and where he is at, watching as things add to his load and watching him relax as things become less. It’s a huge mental game at the best of times. I just want the best for my son.
I guess usually the thought of a loud pool with the echoing of excited children and splashing would be something I wouldn’t often consider, however I know that water is great for him and he enjoys it. For us to have a success it’s all about the layering and expectations.
Layer 1, talk to him about what we are doing today and give him a slower morning and breakfast.
Layer 2, use Cérge as I was able to show Seth the Keilor East Aquatic Centre on the Visual Story, I showed him the car park, the entrance, the reception and the pools.
Layer 3, prepare him to leave and explain to him I am letting the pool know we are coming. I put in the “Must Know” that it is VERY important not to bombard Seth with long conversations and questions but he does love a “hello” and smiles.
This part is SO important for me because it’s this part that will get us to Layer 4 and a home run for the outing or it will take us all the way back to zero.
Being able to share this information meant that I was much more confident in getting through reception with a happy child. Often staff try to do the right thing by talking to him because they don’t have the insider knowledge to say “please don’t”.
When we arrived at Keilor East, we were greeted and efficiently moved through the payment process. Everyone was pleasant. it not over the top which was perfect. Yes they were at tad busy at the counter upon arrival and yet they were lovely to deal with.
The staff explained swimming lessons were occurring but there was an outdoor pool that was quite and not too many people so we could enjoy a swim without too much noise. Layer 5 done for me! Explained, efficient and quiet place!
My anxiety was so much less on this outing just because I felt like I had back up, like a silent mum army behind me.
I’m so glad we decided to attend again and used Cérge, we had a great experience and look forward to many more visits like this one!
We ended up home, fulfilled and smiling! Home run!
Thank you

I thought my love for basketball was gone forever, I thought we had our time & now we were over for good. I haven’t played basketball for 6 years, it’s like losing so much of my identity, a part of myself.I’m a huge fan of sport but I have anxiety & depression, I like to live alone and I like quiet places. Quiet places & sport don’t always go together that well, so for the past few years anxiety wins & I haven’t been able to immerse myself in sport like in the past.I know playing again would help. I just can’t get to the point of where it can help me because my barriers aren’t in playing the sport. My barriers are leaving the house.Whenever I have to go somewhere, my mind pretends like I am already there & starts having different conversations. So many voices & thoughts all telling me different scenarios & that makes it hard for me to concentrate. When I reach the place where I know it will be busy my heart starts beating fast, I feel alot of anxiety & discomfort & my brain get frozen. All I can think of is bad situations. Bad outcomes. Bad scenarios. It’s exhausting.I am scared people are going to make fun of me & won’t talk to me & it loops around & around. When I go in there & I am not comfortable I start feeling anxious & uneasy & feel like running away. Fight or flight kicks in & it can really take over my life.I heard about Cérge & at first wasn’t sure it could help me. I didn’t want to make a big deal or draw attention to myself but I noticed Eagle Stadium was on the app & they have basketball. I love ball.It took me a while to work up the courage to go to check it out. I looked at the Visual Story & Sensory Guide & went through all the stuff on the app. I knew if I could prepare my brain for what it would see by looking at all the photos, then when I get there it would be like what I have already seen & it would hack my brain to feel more at ease. The survival tips and processes of anxiety & depression are very real & often very unnoticed. After a few months I finally felt ready. I had all the information and all the visuals. I used the app to let customer service know I was going and used the Cérge chat in the app also for support.Arriving at Eagle Stadium & going to the courts felt like home, I could not look away. The smell of the court, the squeak of the ball. My body remembered & it felt like home. The staff were so welcoming and kind & gave me a timetable and spoke to me about what was on and when.Hearing the bounce, the ball, the cheers, the thumping as people ran up & down the courts. I need to be back. I am so coming back.I left with desire & a plan! The staff gave me details of who organise teams so I can play in a team & I also asked about tennis because I would love to play tennis. Buts that’s the next story!

We are teaming up with a new initiative, Cèrge. Cèrge is a communication platform created to help people with disability connect with local businesses in their community. It allows organisations to provide personalised services to customers with disability with the aim of reducing the fear, anxiety and discrimination individuals with disability go through as customers. Through the Cèrge app, the customer can notify participating businesses that they will be arriving, giving staff awareness of what the customer may need while in the store.Today our customer visited the Swan Hill Leisure Centre to have a shot of basketball with his support worker. He was able to communicate through the app notifying the leisure centre of when he would be arriving and what he was planning on doing while there. Upon arrival he was met by staff who greeted him by name creating a welcoming experience for our customer. This helped our customer feel very comfortable and he went on to enjoy a shot of basketball while there!

When people don’t try and communicate and can’t be bothered it makes me feel uncomfortable, unimportant and small. Just because I can’t hear doesn’t mean I should be treated differently. Today I arrived at Huntly Aquatic using the Cérge App. I am a Deaf woman and communicate via sign and lip reading mostly. I often have communication struggles and a lot of people do not use sign language or it takes them a while to realise I am Deaf and that I need to communicate differently than what they may have assumed. However today, at Huntly Aquatic I was greeted by two staff members who were very pleasant and kind. I will be honest I was nervous because I wasn’t sure what it would be like or if there would be a communication breakdown. I had put my information into the app so I knew they were aware which I think helped both sides prepare. When I arrived we spoke together for about 5 mins, we used a range of gestures, writing and typing on the phone which is fine. I liked that they were enthusiastic to do their best to communicate with me and it didn’t feel like a bother. We enjoyed having a chat :) I was able to find out everything I needed to know about the venue and the locations of all 3 pools. They have a kids areas too which was great because now I shall return with my kids and have a great family inclusive day out. Being a Deaf person sometimes I experience people thinking I have a low intelligence or that I won’t understand them. This is a really damaging assumption as I am a smart woman and live a great life, I just can’t hear. I am really mindful of not wanting my kids to experience or witness discrimination as I went them to have a great experience in the world and see all people as equals. I really enjoyed using the Cérge app, I had heard good things about it from a friend who used it in Auckland and so I was happy to give it a go!

My son lives with Autism and it’s so important for him to fill his bucket of certain sensory needs. In today’s case that bucket was the need to gently pat animals. As a mum, I like to make sure Seth has a mix of exposures, experiences and in an environment that is conducive to him feeling safe to explore and learn. Obviously with animals and excitement this can be tricky to manage and you really need the right place.Edendale Community Environment Farm is this place. Just Awesome!New places are always nerve racking, I’m not going to lie. I never, ever know how the day will go and it can be a challenge. However, I’ve used Cérge at a pool and I trust that if Cérge is there the staff care. It just makes me feel so much more at ease. When we arrived at Edendale they were so engaging and happy to see us, they were great with Seth too. No crappy small talk trying to get him to like them, just lets go see the animal later and have some fun.We saw chickens, roosters, ducks, goats, alpacas, llamas and so many more! It was truly so very cool! Some were super excited to meet us and very keen on some yummy treats.Seth had a full bucket of animal love and I had a full bucket of mum love!So much better than a day of mum guilt.Today was a good day!
